Counties ready for municipal primary election day

By Stephanie Wiechmann | Published on in Uncategorized

Hoosiers in cities across the state will head to the polls tomorrow to cast ballots for mayor and city council candidates in this year’s municipal primary election. As with every election, polls will be open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM in all cities holding a primary. Because of a lack of contested races, some counties will only be holding a Democratic or Republican primary vote – not both.

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles offices in counties holding an election tomorrow are staying open late tonight and have extended hours tomorrow for anyone needing a new or updated state ID card to vote. Branches are open until 8:00 PM tonight and open tomorrow, just like voting locations, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

In last year’s November general election, Indiana had the lowest voter turnout in the nation at 28 percent. Municipal elections historically draw less voters to the polls and primary elections even less than that.  2011’s municipal primary saw only 9 percent of registered Hoosier voters actually cast a ballot.
