Survey Says Employer Health Insurance Plans Vary Depending on the Kind of Job, Age of Worker

A new survey shows that employer health insurance plans vary widely among job fields.

The United Benefit Advisors Health Plan Survey says employees in the construction, retail and hospitality sectors tend to be less expensive to cover than those in the education and the non-profit sectors. Indianapolis-based LHD Benefit Advisors Principal Mark Sherman says it also comes down to the age of those being insured and the depth of the insurance packages themselves.

Sherman says younger workers are less expensive to insure than older workers who tend to have greater health issues. He says the construction industry sees more young, single males who value higher wages over health benefits as opposed to those who work in education who value more substantial health benefits packages.

Sherman says the size and age of companies are also factors; large, traditional companies tend to offer more comprehensive health insurance packages than start-ups. Sherman says healthcare reform hasn‘t really lowered costs for anyone. He says consumer education is still needed to help people buy benefits better and gain greater access to quality healthcare.
