State approves year-long needle exchange for Scott County

By Indiana Public Broadcasting | Published on in Uncategorized

Indiana’s State Health Commissioner has approved the state’s first legal needle exchange program under a law passed this legislative session. Scott County’s needle exchange set up by Governor Mike Pence’s public health emergency declaration will continue for at least the next year. The county is battling an outbreak of HIV linked to IV drug used that’s grown to 160 cases.

State Epidemiologist Pam Pontones says there’s evidence that outbreak could now be contained.

But Pontones also notes that health officials still need to find and test about 100 more people who have had contact with the HIV patients. State and county officials will also need to draft a transition plan to decide how to pay for the ongoing needle exchange program.
