INDOT Experimenting with Digital, Variable, Speed Limit Signs

By Network Indiana | Published on in Uncategorized

(EDINBURGH)- INDOT is experimenting with speed limits which vary depending on the traffic. INDOT is patching and resurfacing a 10-mile stretch of I-65 between Edinburgh and Franklin. It‘s putting in new digital speed limit signs starting a few miles ahead of the work zone on either side, and in between. If traffic‘s moving smoothly, the limit will be the normal 70 miles an hour, but as congestion builds, it can be cut to 55 or 45 in hopes of reducing rear-end collisions. Spokesman Harry Maginity says if it works, INDOT may try it in other work zones, or for everyday congestion unrelated to roadwork.
