Attorney General says A-F grades rule legal
The state’s attorney general said today that Hoosier schools should be able to receive A-F letter grades as planned this year. The news comes after policymakers questioned whether a loophole in state law would void this year’s grades.
Over the last few years, lawmakers and education officials have changed the process for calculating those school accountability rankings, but the state is still operating under the old calculation model this year. Yesterday, Noblesville Senator Luke Kenley says state education officials asked for clarification, in case the transition could face scrutiny on the federal level.
In addition to confirming the legality of the transition, the Attorney General’s office also recommends the legislature consider passing a law next year reconfirming the State Board of Education’s authority to assign grades.
