Auburn Common Council Refuses LGBT Protections

By Network Indiana | Published on in Uncategorized

(AUBURN)- The same day the Carmel City Council voted to extend protections to LGBT individuals, another Indiana city has done the opposite. Officials in the Auburn Common Council refused to include gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender in the city’s policy on nondiscrimination.

Auburn is a half hour north of Fort Wayne. Councilman Mike Walter motioned to include sexual orientation and gender identity in the policy, as well as genetics, ancestry and marital status.

However, no other council members seconded his motion. The vote, which fell predominantly along party lines, continued to extend the protections offered in the 1964 Federal Civil Rights Act under Title VI, which includes race, ethnicity and national origin among the protected classes.
