Flash flooding prompted numerous water rescues Sunday night on the south side of Muncie following heavy thunderstorm rains.  Indianapolis National Weather Service (NWS) Meteorologist Joe Skowronek told IPR News Sunday night radar estimates indicated between 2.0 and 3.5 inches of rain fell on the south and southeastern parts of the city, within five miles of downtown.

The City of Muncie’s Twitter site said “Avoid south Muncie if possible. Severe flooding, power lines down, trees fallen on homes, MFD (Muncie Fire Department) water rescues. All emergency units responding.”

Meanwhile, Skowronek said only a half inch of rain fell on the north side of Muncie during the same period Sunday, with the western parts of the city getting around a third of an inch.

Flash flood warnings were issued for Delaware, Henry and Randolph counties, Sunday night. Additionally, severe thunderstorm warnings for high winds, hail, and heavy rain were issued for Grant and Blackford counties, north of Muncie, Sunday evening.
