Survey respondents rejected the name Purdue University Northeast because they didn't want to be referred to as PUNE.

A survey has found the most popular suggested new name for Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne as reorganization plans for the campus continue.

An online survey that received more than 4,500 responses, mainly from current students and alumni, favored the name “Purdue University Fort Wayne.”  Respondents liked that it incorporated location, the Purdue brand, and the word “university.”

Survey results were shared with Purdue University trustees today.  A second possible choice – “Purdue University Northeast” – didn’t find favor because the school’s acronym PUNE could be read as “puny.”

Trustees from both Purdue and Indiana University are slated to vote on the campus’s name change in June.  The restructuring of IPFW to a mostly Purdue-led campus officially begins in the summer of 2018. Purdue trustees also blessed the creation of 15 working groups which will help realign the way IPFW functions.  The working groups will have to settle everything from campus finances to alumni outreach to deciding whether to keep the sports teams’ current nickname, the Mastadons.
