Muncie’s Canan Commons, in the center of the city, saw around 200 people gathered Sunday evening to support those in Charlottesville, Virginia. Violence there left one person dead and dozens injured. Two Virginia state police officers were also killed in a helicopter crash while monitoring protests. The protests were originated by white supremacists objecting to the removal of a statue of confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, in the southern city.

The Star Press reports the “Strength in Peace Candlelight Vigil” started at 7 p.m. at the downtown park. Numerous religious affiliations and races were represented by those in attendance who came out to show support for peace, hope, and love.

The city’s Facebook page said the vigil was intended to “display strength through peace and unity in intolerance of hate.”
