Muncie Flies Flags Of Honor

By Rachel Russell | Published on in Community, Local News

This time of year for the last several years, flags have appeared along Wheeling Avenue in Muncie. These flags are not a random act of patriotism.

The 1,000 flags that line Minnetrista’s lawn from September 4 until September 11  is called the Flags of Honor. Some of those flags showcase a yellow ribbon with a name of someone being honored. With the 16th anniversary of September 11 approaching, the Muncie community has flags on display to remember that day. Veterans, active duty soldiers, firefighters, police officers, and any citizen can be honored for a $30 donation. The proceeds go to Prevent Child Abuse America, the Boy’s and Girl’s club of Muncie and AMVETS Post 12.

The Muncie Exchange club is responsible for hosting the Flags of Honor.  Larry Campbell, one of the club members, says his favorite part about the Flags of Honor is setting up all the flags and seeing the people of Muncie help put them on display. Along with the donations,  corporate sponsors, Ball State fraternities and the Muncie Central High School JROTC offer their help.

Warner VanFleet, an Exchange Club member, said it is moving to watch veterans come look at the display with tears in their eyes. As for those buying the ribbons, VanFleet said they almost always want to share their stories about who they are honoring.

On Monday, September 11, at 6 p.m., America’s Hometown Band will perform, followed by a ceremony honoring the names on each flag. After the concert, those who chose to honor someone will be able to take the ribbon they purchased with them. If you are interested in donating or honoring someone you know, you can visit the Flags of Honor website.
