Ball State’s women’s basketball Cardinals suffered their worst loss of the season last night against Western Michigan in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. The final score was 65 to 54. Before the tournament, the Cards were 24-and-5, losing by an average of just 5.2 points in their five losses.  Poor shooting from both the field and the foul line, and a bad assist-to-turnover ratio led to the defeat.  Just two weeks ago, Ball State beat Western Michigan by 27 points.  Carmen Grande led Ball State scoring with 16 points.

In Wednesday’s other games, top-seed Central Michigan beat Eastern Michigan 67-64.  Miami got by Ohio 69-66, and 2nd-seeded Buffalo hammered Kent State 72-50.

Friday in the semi-final round, Western Michigan will face Buffalo at 1:30 p.m., on ESPN-3.

Central Michigan will take on Miami in Friday’s first game at 11 a.m., also on ESPN-3.

Ball State was considered by many observers to be an NCAA Tournament team, either by winning the MAC Tournament and its automatic bid to “The Big Dance,” or as a bubble team, had the Cards reached the MAC championship game, and lost.  However, Ball State will likely get a bid to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament.  If chosen, it will be the Cards’s sixth trip in a row to the WNIT.

Meanwhile, the Ball State men’s basketball Cardinals play Kent State today at 2:30 in their MAC Tournament quarterfinal game.  You can see that contest on ESPN-3.
