Carrier’s Indianapolis factory – famous across the nation for laying off 600 workers and outsourcing production to Mexico – is now bringing 120 of those workers back to the plant. But as Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Drew Daudelin reports, union leaders say no one knows how long those jobs will last.

United Steelworkers Local 1999 is the union that represents workers at Carrier. Its president, Robert James, says he’s not surprised the company is rehiring laid off workers, since this time of year brings especially demanding work.

James says he’s glad the opportunity came for some who are still unemployed. But he says the relief might not be permanent.

“None of us know, you know, as to how long this is going to last. We have to wait and see. Because we haven’t been informed of any date that they would be let go, or anything of that nature.”

James says the workers were chosen based on level of seniority, and are getting paid their former salaries.

Carrier made news in 2016 when then-President elect Donald Trump promised to stop jobs from leaving, which led to Carrier making a deal that saved some of them.

The company did not respond to a request for comment.
