The abrupt closing of Harrison College leaves its 3,000 students in limbo.

Harrison closed its doors Sunday after 116 years, and just two days after announcing the closure. The University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne and the online WGU are offering scholarships to students who want to transfer. And WGU Chancellor Allison Barber went to Harrison’s northside Indianapolis campus in person to urge students to continue pursuing their degree, whether at WGU or somewhere else.

Barber says she’s been “heartbroken” talking to Harrison students. One student working on a business degree told her he wanted to “just go home and cry.”

Both WGU and Saint Francis offer business and nursing degrees, two of Harrison’s degree programs.

Harrison’s website lists its preferred transfer location as National American University. Like Harrison, it’s a for-profit university — its 19 locations include one in Indianapolis.

Harrison College is the fourth Indiana college to close its doors in two years. The private Saint Joseph’s College closed last year in the face of 27-million dollars in debt. Harrison, Brown Mackie College and ITT Tech were all for-profit college chains with Indiana locations.

Harrison began as Indiana Business College in 1902 — it changed its name nine years ago.
