Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson says the state Democratic Party mistakenly sent out potentially thousands of faulty absentee ballot applications.

State law requires applications for absentee ballots to include instructions about how to submit them. But applications distributed by the Indiana Democratic Party didn’t. And some counties denied some of those applications when voters submitted them.

Lawson says the Indiana Election Division instructed counties to approve the faulty applications and send voters their absentee ballots.

“If you got a mailing from the Indiana Democratic Party and in that mailing was an application for an absentee ballot, that you need to double check that your application is good and you will be receiving a ballot,” Lawson says.

Lawson says she wants to ensure voters aren’t disenfranchised by the mistake.

Democratic Party Chair John Zody says he’s glad Lawson took the steps she did.

The deadline for voters to submit an absentee ballot application is Oct. 29.

The deadline to register to vote in Indiana or update a registration is Oct. 9.
