INDOT: No Date For Substantial Completion Of I-69 Section 5

By Barbara Brosher, IPB News | Published on in Government, Statewide News, Transportation
A private developer was supposed to finish Section 5 construction in October 2016. When the state took the project over, it set a goal of achieving substantial completion by Aug. 31, 2018 (WFIU/WTIU News).

Despite the state taking control of I-69’s delay-plagued extension section between Martinsville and Bloomington in August 2017, the Indiana Department of Transportation says it still doesn’t know when most of the construction on the road will be finished.

The section’s original completion date was supposed to be two years ago.  The state took over the project after a private developer tasked with building and maintaining the extension section faced significant financial problems and delays.

Scott Manning with INDOT says the upcoming weather will affect how quickly crews can finish remaining work.

“What really is between us and substantial completion is getting the guardrail work and lane striping work done,” Manning says. “And, we’re hoping that within the next couple of weeks we’ll have that completed.”

Last month, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb announced the final section of the I-69 extension from Martinsville to Indianapolis would be finished in 2024.  That’s year’s ahead of schedule, thanks to a state investment of more than $600 million.
