U.S. Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) sounded warning bells for America’s future in his final floor speech this week.

Donnelly praised bipartisan successes like the Right to Try bill, which allows terminally ill patients to use treatments that haven’t yet received full federal approval, and legislation to help reduce military and veteran suicides.

But he also preached caution about the nation’s growing deficit, which he says could, in his words, “destroy everything.”

“The least we can do is pay our bills, is to not give our crazy tax cuts that we can’t pay for, is to make sure that we balance our budgets,” Donnelly says. “We’re better than this.”

Donnelly also expressed frustration with what he calls “divisive rhetoric” in campaigns driven by untraceable contributions.

“People ought to have the right to know who’s talking to them,” Donnelly says.

Donnelly served in Congress for 12 years.
