Sunday Alcohol Sales: Liquor Stores Benefiting, Breweries Adapting
It’s been nearly 10 months since Indiana legalized Sunday alcohol sales. Although liquor stores were largely against the change, some are reaping the benefits. As Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Lindsey Wright reports, some Hoosier breweries can’t say the same thing.
Sundays are now one of the busiest days of the week for the Beverage Shop, a liquor store in Ellettsville.
General Manager Adam Sulinski says revenue is easily up 5 to 6 percent weekly since Sunday alcohol sales became legal.
“We’ve actually been waiting for it to slow down or maybe wear off, but its not. I think people have adjusted themselves now to have Sunday as a true weekend day,” he says.
By law, Sunday alcohol sales can take place from noon to 8:00 PM. Sulinski says those hours aren’t normal for some customers.
“No one’s still set on the time frame either because between the hours [of] 10 in the morning and noon, there’s probably 40 people hitting the lock door and of course right at 8, there’s 40 people rushing to hurry up and get in and there’s ones that show up at 9.”
Before the law took effect some breweries raised concerns about how it might impact their bottom line. Under the old state law breweries had a monopoly on carry out Sunday sales. While some say they haven’t noticed any change, Upland Brewing Company says it’s seen a notable difference, even in Sunday food and on-site beer sales.
In an email, officials say the brewery is finding new ways to adapt to the law.
