Hoosiers will get the chance this week to say goodbye to former U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), who passed away April 28.

The public will get its first chance to bid farewell to Richard Lugar on Tuesday, when the former senator and Indianapolis mayor will lie in repose at the statehouse. It’s a relatively rare honor, last done in 2015 for Rep. Bill Crawford (D-Indianapolis), the longest serving African American lawmaker in state history.

Gov. Eric Holcomb and current Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett will hold a short ceremony at the Statehouse at noon, with the public then able to pay their last respects through sunset on Tuesday, and again Wednesday morning.

The Lugar family will also be at the statehouse Tuesday afternoon to greet the public.

Lugar’s funeral will be Wednesday afternoon, at St. Luke’s United Methodist on the far northside of Indianapolis. The family will welcome as many attending as possible – but the service will also be livestreamed on the internet for those who can’t be there in person.

Those who wish to attend must register here.
