Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill says he’s investigating how and why a deceased, former Indiana physician took more than 2,200 fetal remains from Indiana to his Illinois home.

Hill detailed initial results Friday of the inquiry into Ulrich Klopfer.

Police say Klopfer’s family discovered fetal remains on his Illinois property last week. Hill says the initial investigation revealed all 2,246 remains are from Klopfer’s Indiana clinics, from between 2000 and 2002.

“There are lots of unanswered questions concerning the why, the how, the what and we’re going to continue the investigatory process to determine, as best we can, why this occurred and what the purpose was,” Hill says.

The Republican Attorney General says while obviously no charges will be brought against Klopfer, who died earlier this month, the investigation will seek to discover whether other people were involved in transporting the fetal remains to Illinois – and whether that violated any medical licensing standards or state laws.

Hill says his office is also helping make sure the medical records discovered with the fetal remains are secured and that private information of Klopfer’s former patients wasn’t released.
