A state summer study committee recommends that Indiana find the money for a federal study into beach erosion along Lake Michigan.

High water levels on the lake and man-made structures like seawalls have caused erosion along several beaches in northwest Indiana, including those at Indiana Dunes National Park. Lakeshore towns and environmentalists are concerned this will affect tourism along the lake and harm vulnerable plant and animal species.

The committee suggests the state come up with about 850 thousand dollars to go toward a study by the U-S Army Corps of Engineers to develop long-term solutions to Lake Michigan beach erosion.

There’s no telling whether the Governor and the state budget committee will act upon that recommendation.
