While there are international worries about the COVID-19 coronavirus, the Indiana State Department of Health says activity for the yearly flu is high in the state.  The agency is confirming 64 flu-related deaths this season.

In a report released Friday, the agency says 64 deaths is normal for this time of year.  Data shows 34 of those fatalities were Hoosiers aged 65 or older.  That age group, along with children under five and anyone with chronic diseases are at a higher risk of catching the flu.  Marion and Lake counties have seen the highest number of flu-related deaths.

Indiana isn’t alone with high flu activity.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says nearly all states have high or moderate flu activity.   The only two states with minimal flu levels are Idaho and Alaska.

ISDH encourages people to wash hands, disinfect surfaces and to cover their mouth and nose to prevent the spread of the flu. It also says it’s not too late for a flu shot.
