The Indiana University School of Medicine announced Thursday it has been selected to participate as part of an international COVID-19 vaccine trial.

AstraZeneca is the pharmaceutical company developing the vaccine. IU will recruit up to 1,500 trial participants to determine if it’s safe and effective. This would be the final stage needed for FDA approval of the drug.

Dr. Cynthia Brown is the study’s lead researcher. She says ideal participants are 18 or older who have not had COVID-19, but could be more likely to contract the disease.

“Perhaps they’re bus drivers or factory workers or people working in health care and long term care facilities.”

The IU School of Medicine is one of 81 sites across the country that will host a trial for the AstraZeneca vaccine, and the only one in Indiana.
