Herff Jones, which rents graduation attire to IU students, says it experienced a data breach and is alerting its customers.

“I’m kind of curious as to why this happened this year or what was so insecure about the data that they were able to have that big of a breach,” said Claire O’Meara, who graduated from IU-Bloomington in May.

O’Meara said her mother’s charge card, which was used to rent her cap and gown, now has two unauthorized charges for several hundred dollars at Walmart.

Herff Jones is encouraging graduates and parents to monitor their cards and report any suspicious activity.

It hired a cybersecurity firm to investigate the hacking incident and has alerted law enforcement.

Herff Jones is asking anyone with questions about the incident to call 855-535-1795, between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. eastern time, Monday through Friday.
