Biden’s Lifting of Refugee Cap Unlikely to Affect Indiana’s Camp Atterbury

The number of refugees allowed in the country next fiscal year will double from the previous cap
of 62,500.  The White House announced it would raise the annual refugee cap in a report to Congress on
Monday.

They say there’s an unprecedented number of displaced people around the world because of
conflict, humanitarian crises and climate change.

But most of the people who fled Afghanistan are technically evacuees  not refugees. That means
many people at Camp Atterbury will likely be unaffected by the move, at least for now.

The Wall Street Journal reports the Biden administration wants Congress to pass a law creating a
pathway to citizenship for those Afghan evacuees.
