Muncie’s mayor says the former Delaware County Justice Center in downtown Muncie has begun a transformation into an indoor parking lot and luxury condos. IPR’s Stephanie Wiechmann reports.

According to a Monday afternoon statement, the $3.4 million project to reuse the former justice center will include more parking spaces than condos – nearly 150 parking spots to the 15 luxury condos the building will hold.

Muncie Mayor Dan Ridenour says the extra parking spaces will “solve the parking issues at City Hall.”  The building is also across the street from the Delaware County Building, where some county offices are still housed.

According to the developer, those 15 condos will be larger than the recent White River Lofts project down the street.  In the city’s statement, developer Matt Jennings says the units will range from 1,500 – 4,000 square feet.  Some will be a two-floor layout.  And the developer says parking spaces for those condos will be directly outside each unit, using a second-floor parking ramp.

Jennings says the building’s conversion will be completed by January 2023.
