Earlham College in Richmond is leasing some of its campus land for a retail plaza for up to four businesses.

This week, the school of about 900 students broke ground on the project at National Road West and College Avenue.

Earlham’s agreement with a local retail consultant is a 60-year-lease on the property.  Earlham officials say it includes a provision where Earlham can reject tenants that “do not live up to the vision of the project.”

Earlham President Ann Houtman says the area of campus is underutilized and will both give students more retail options and strengthen the connection with Richmond.

The new shopping center is slated to open late this year or early next year.
