Alexandria school evacuates after threat, but police say it was a false alarm

Students at Alexandria Junior-Senior High in Madison County were evacuated Monday after the school received a threat call.  But as IPR’s Stephanie Wiechmann reports, the Indiana State Police says that call was a false alarm.

Sergeant Scott Keegan is the public information officer for ISP’s Pendleton District.  He said school administrators called police after receiving a threat by telephone just after 10 AM.

“This school has a full-time resource officer,” Keegan said.  “So one minute after the call was received, he was able to let them know that he had no signs of threats.  Responding units arrived on scene within three minutes of the call.”

Keegan said police decided it was best to evacuate the school and students were sent to a nearby church for parents to pick up.

State police say the district’s elementary schools went to lockdown while police were at the junior-senior high and several other districts took precautions.

Keegan said the threat turning out to be a false alarm was the best possible outcome for the situation.

Last Friday, dozens of school districts closed or switched to remote learning because of bomb threats.  The Alexandria district held classes as normal.  The Madison County districts of Frankton-Lapel, Madison-Grant and Shenandoah all went to e-learning.

Neither administrators nor police could say whether Alexandria received a threat on Friday.

State police said it found no credible threats to districts after Friday’s mass bomb threat.

The investigation into Alexandria’s Monday’s threat call is continuing.
