00;00;00;04 - 00;00;15;16 Gwen Burton I'm Gwen Burton, and this is the Owsley moment. Brought to you by the David Owsley Museum of Art, the Ball State School of Art and IPR. 00;00;15;18 - 00;00;36;26 Gwen Burton In the David Owsley Museum of Art's Contemporary Craft Gallery sits a stoneware cache pot made by local ceramicist John Peterson. The word cache is French for to hide, and a cache pot is a decorative ceramic piece used to hide the plastic containers that hold store bought plants. This one is quite an upgrade, and it demonstrates the skills of local ceramicist, 00;00;36;26 - 00;01;01;27 Gwen Burton John Peterson. Peterson used a cream colored glaze to coat the outside of the pot, which contrasts with the burnt umber glaze on the inside. The surface of the pot, inside and out, is textured with fine horizontal lines that create a sense of motion and wind. The exterior glaze has been scratched through using this graffito technique. Those scratches form images of wheat grasses that bend and wave. 00;01;01;29 - 00;01;22;12 Gwen Burton The lack of a distinct line indicating where the ground ends and sky begins, gives the wheat a sense of weightlessness. 00;01;22;14 - 00;01;43;15 Gwen Burton John Peterson graduated from Ball State University and has worked in the Muncie area ever since. He continues to make pottery today and teaches classes to those who want to make honest, traditional pottery that could last a lifetime. 00;01;43;18 - 00;01;47;19 Gwen Burton We'd like to thank Ball State student Sammy Harvey for their research. 00;01;47;21 - 00;01;59;24 Martin Tebo Find more information and listen to Past Moments online at Indiana Public radio dot org slash Owsley moment.
