Radio Drama Auditions

Calling all voice actors!

Indiana Public Radio will hold auditions for our 2023 holiday radio drama, “All Out for Christmas: A Showbiz Radio Fable” (a loving pastiche of “White Christmas” and “42nd Street” set in a midwest radio station in 1947) from 6 to 9 p.m. November 8 and 9 at the IPR offices, Room 128 of the Letterman Building, on the Ball State University campus.

One performance will take place on Thursday, Dec. 14 before a live audience in Sursa Performance Hall on the Ball State campus, and simulcast on IPR.  Ball State PBS will record the performance for broadcast on December 24 at noon and December 25 at 6:00pm

Character List:

  • Dorothy Sullivan – (F –49 years old) A faded Broadway star visiting Argyle, IN from NYC to do this show as a favor to her friend Jack…an old paramour. She has a reputation for being difficult…a classic diva. But at heart, she cares about her craft, and her hometown, and the people she loves.
  • Henry Foster – (M –58) Dorothy’s manager, and a producer of her shows on Broadway. He and she are in a relationship. He can be a bit cantankerous. Partially because he is sometimes reduced to being Dorothy’s wrangler. But he’s basically a good director. Unfortunately, his days of hits are behind him at the moment.
  • Jack Edwards – (M –52) The owner of the radio station. If he doesn’t score a big hit with this Christmas show, he could lose the station. And Dorothy is his ticket to a successful show.
  • Millie Scott – (F –25) An ingénue from town. She is a high school teacher but has dreams of becoming a full-time performer. She has a lovely singing voice and is often featured in the broadcasts on Jack’s station. Unbeknownst to everyone, she is Dorothy Sullivan and Jack Langley’s long-lost daughter.
  • Benjamin Howard – (M –28) The radio station’s young manager. He produces all the programming. Jack hasn’t told him about the station’s struggles, but he knows anyway. So, he’s works hard to help keep the station open. If KMIN closes, he doesn’t have another job to go to, and he doesn’t want to leave Argyle, which would mean leaving Millie behind. He has a slight limp from a wound he got fighting in WWII.
  • Lillian Parker – (F –35) An actor turned writer. Regularly works with Henry and Dorothy to write shows for her to star in. The regular partner of Alvin “Alvie” Evans. She’s the song writer. A smart broad…in the best sense of the word.
  • Alvin “Alvie” Evans – (M –38) A mystery novelist turned Broadway writer. Regularly works with Henry and Dorothy to write shows for her to star in. The regular partner of Alice Parker. He writes the libretto and lyrics.
  • Ruby Powell – (F– 16) A local girl who acts in many of the presentations at KMIN. She’s SUPER excited to meet her idol, Dorothy Sullivan and she knows everything about her career. As well as that of Katherine Cornell…and Helen Hayes. She’s a theatre creature.
