Muncie Police Officers Shoot Man They Say Tried To Run Them Over

Indiana State Police are investigating a Friday morning Muncie traffic stop where local officers shot a man they say tried to run over them in his car.

According to a statement from state police, two Muncie police officers tried to stop a car for a traffic violation near the city’s main post office on Memorial at about 2:30 this morning.

Police say 48-year-old Charles Dinkins did not stop and that he drove through the rear gate of the post office property.  A female passenger “bailed” from the car and the officers went to help her.  While assisting, they say Dinkins drove his car at them.  That’s when the officers fired at the car.

State police say Dinkins was shot, but continued driving the car until it crashed a few blocks away.  He was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

Police say Dinkins’ ID is from Georgia.  But, he’s also wanted for misdemeanor charges in Henry County and he’s a defendant in several local criminal cases.  Court documents from Indiana list Dinkins living at a Muncie address.

The Muncie Police Department is not commenting and referring all questions to the State Police.  Officials there say they are not releasing any more information while the investigation continues.  Neither department is naming the officers involved.
