Unhealthy heat and humidity levels on the Indiana forecast slate all week

The National Weather Service has issued two heat statements for the IPR area all week.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for IPR listening areas north of Muncie through early Friday morning.  Additionally, Fayette, Union, and Wayne counties are under a Heat Advisory until Friday night.

NWS forecasters say, “Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 95 and 105 expected throughout the week. Low temperatures in the 70s at night will provide little relief from the heat.”  Further, forecasters say, “extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities. Heat stress increases with the number of consecutive hot days.”

Meterologist Earl Breon with the National Weather Service forecast office in Indianapolis says to locate cooling centers in your community in case your home does not have air conditioning.  He says the excessive heat can also magnify symptoms of chronic illnesses – another reason to stay cool and hydrated during hot weather.  Contact your location’s city, town, or county offices to find out where cooling centers are located.  YMCAs and YWCAs also might be open as cooling centers.

The NWS says effects of heat are most impactful for more vulnerable urban populations.  Forecasters encourage us to “drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”
