Joe Winkle is Muncie police chief again
The city of Muncie has named a former police chief to step up to the police department’s top spot again. Today, Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler named former chief Joe Winkle as the new city police chief.
Winkle is currently the director of Delaware County’s E911 Center. Our news partners at the Star Press say Tyler will now look for Winkle’s replacement at the emergency dispatch center. Winkle previously served as police chief under Muncie Mayor Dan Canan from 1996 to 2008.
Winkle will replace Steve Stewart, who resigned on October 31, a few months before he was scheduled to retire from the force. In a two-line resignation letter, Stewart said he was resigning because of “actions” by Tyler and others in government. In early September, Stewart also resigned his position as the chair of the county Democratic Party.
