A former Kmart building in Muncie that’s been vacant for years will soon be turned into a self-storage facility.

U-Haul says it recently purchased the former department store on McGalliard Road and has opened what it calls a “temporary showroom” of trucks, trailers, and moving supplies.

But according to a company statement, the 82,000 square foot building will soon house about 40,000 square feet of self-storage units.

Kmart closed its doors in Muncie in late 2014 and the building has been sitting empty since then.

The company says it will hire about 10 people when construction on the self-storage facility is complete.  It also says it will look to hire locally.
