Events Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Across The State

Cities throughout the state will celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with events ranging from lectures to volunteering. See the events near you below.

Muncie-Anderson

Anderson University Celebration: Activities include lectures, performances, film viewing, and a march. All day on Monday, Jan. 15 and Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Ball State University MLK Speaker Series: A presentation by Jasmine Rand “Modern Civil Rights Movement.” Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m.

Ball State Community Breakfast, Unity March: A Community Breakfast will be held at 9 this morning at Ball State’s Student Center Cardinal Hall. A Unity March will start at 11 this morning at the Multi-cultural Center, located at 325 N. McKinley, just south of the Student Center. Participants are asked to arrive by 10:45 a.m.

MLK Children & Youth Program: Muncie Central High School will be the site of programs for children and youth, Monday, for grades K through 12.  A breakfast will be served from 8 to 9 a.m.  Workshops and youth empowerment sessions will be held after the breakfast.  Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m.

Worship Service: The Dr.King Community Worship Service will be at the Union Missionary Baptist Church at 1100 N. Macedonia Ave., Muncie, this evening at 6.

 

Bloomington

MLK Day Celebration: Family friendly event geared toward elementary-aged youth that will feature African Storyteller Ms. Deborah Asante from the Arts for Learning Indiana. Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m.

Student Leadership Breakfast: W. Kamau Bell, sociopolitical comedian and host of the hit Emmy Award nominated CNN docu-series, United Shades of America, will deliver the keynote address at IU’s 2018 Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Leadership Breakfast. Monday, Jan. 15 at 8:30 a.m.

MLK Day Write-In: Join with fellow community members to write to your elected representatives, and let state and national officials know what’s important to you, their constituent. Monday Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.

MLK Day Teach-In: This event is geared toward teens and mature tweens, driven to explore social issues in relation to Dr. MLK Jr. And participate in a thoughtful dialogue. Monday, Jan. 15 at 12 p.m.

Unity Summit: This event is a group activity, discussing actions steps toward coalition building. Monday, Jan. 15 at 12:30 p.m.

MLK Day Inclusion Cookout: The NPHC (historically black) is working with PHA/IFC (predominantly white) on a day where we will eliminate color and make our campus a safe environment for all people regardless of race, sex, gender etc. Monday, Jan. 15 at 3:30 p.m.

Birthday Celebration: African American Choral Ensemble, Legacy Award Presentation, Keynote Speech by Rev. Harold Middlebrook, friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and active participant in nonviolent civic engagement efforts. Monday, Jan. 15: reception at 6 p.m., program begins at 7 p.m.

‘A Seat at the Table’ Celebration Dinner: Attendees will participate in a guided discussion with Community Educators and Resident Assistants. The event is ticketed. Monday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m.

 

Columbus

Columbus Then and Now: Columbus has a rich history of integration, but it did not happen over night and it was not always easy. This panel discussion will explore where we’ve been, where we are now, and how much more we need to do to truly become the community we want to be. Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.

 

Terre Haute

Peace for Martin Luther King Day: Bricks 4 Kidz is celebrating the new exhibit at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and celebrating MLK Day with a Building Peace by Piece workshop. Monday, Jan. 15 at 1 p.m.

Indiana State University Day of Service: Students give back to ISU and the Terre Haute community by working on various projects at numerous sites in the Wabash Valley. Monday, Jan. 15.

Concert Honoring Martin Luther King: The Indiana State University School of Music will present a concert in celebration of “The Dream” of Martin Luther King Jr. Monday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

 

Kokomo

Advancing the Dream – Let Freedom Ring: State Sen. Greg Taylor will discuss the importance of advancing MLK Jr.’s dream. Saturday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m.

‘I Am Not Your Negro’ Viewing & Discussion: Showing of the documentary: I Am Not Your Negro Discussion to follow film led by Dr. Sarah Heath, Chair of History and Political Science. Event is free and open to the public. Thursday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m.

 

Indianapolis

Wreath-placing ceremony: Indiana War Memorial: Soldiers & Sailors Monument. Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.

Legacy March: Monument Circle to the Statehouse. Friday, Jan. 12 at 11:15 a.m.

Celebration: Indiana Statehouse Rotunda at 12 p.m.

IUPUI Day of Service: Community service opportunities. Monday, Jan. 15 at 8 a.m.

 

Fort Wayne

University of St. Francis MLK Day: Events all day Monday, Jan. 15.

Unity Day: All-day event including round-table discussions and free health screenings. Monday, Jan. 15 beginning at 8 a.m.

 

West Lafayette

Trailblazing Judge Diversity Pioneer: A Celebration of the Life And Legacy Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

 

New Albany

IU Southeast Day of Service: Community service opportunities at the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana, Green Valley Care Center, and Our Place Drug and Alcohol Services. Monday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m.

 

Evansville

University of Southern Indiana Memorial Luncheon: Featuring guest speaker Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, author, first female president of Spelman College and past president of Bennett College. Monday, Jan. 15 at 11 a.m.

Re-enactment of the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington: The theme of this year’s University of Evansville event is “Love is the only force capable of transforming and enemy into a friend.” Monday, Jan. 15 starting at 11:45 a.m.

 

Gary

Celebration featuring Stephon Ferguson: For the past 12 years, Ferguson has traveled the globe performing as King and educating people about King’s philosophy of love, peace, justice and unity to bring about positive change and create the beloved community. Thursday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m.
