Anderson auto dealership to build on former GM site

City leaders and business officials gathered in Anderson this afternoon to announce that a local auto dealership will build new buildings on the site of a former GM plant and donate their existing facility to train new automotive technicians.  Mary Jamerson, president of Autoworld, says the company will build two new car dealerships on the former GM Plant 11 site on Scatterfield Road – investing 7-and-a-half million dollars and creating 30 new jobs.  Autoworld is giving its existing location on North Broadway to Ivy Tech Community College.  It will be turned into an Automotive Technology facility to train new auto technicians.

Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith says this has been an 8-year mission to attract new business to the property.   He says the former brownfield site is designated by the state as a so-called CRED district – which stands for Community Revitalization Enhancement District.  This means that state retail sales tax can be used to update utilities and roads around the area.  Jamerson says the company will also look at adding a third dealership on the site in the future.
