Governor Mitch Daniels made an appearance today with a group of Hoosiers who want property tax caps to be included in the state’s constitution.  Meeting at a homeowner’s house on the south side of Indianapolis, Daniels showed support for the measure, which will be on the November election ballot.  The addition to the state constitution wouldn’t set in stone the dollar amount a property owner will pay each year, since property assessments will still be used to calculate tax bills.  And, lawmakers have allowed local governments and schols to ask to go above those caps… something that Daniels pointed out.

Daniels on Tax Cap Exceptions

The property tax caps became law in 2008, despite opposition from groups that said it would limit funding flexibility for government programs.  Now opponents, most notably the Indiana Farm Bureau and state Chamber of Commerce, say they won’t actively campaign against the measure.
