September 2010 Unemployment Report

Published on in Uncategorized

Indiana’s unemployment rate fell slightly in September to 10.1 percent — the sixth straight month of double-digit unemployment.  About 298,000 Hoosiers were unemployed last month.  Despite the drop in unemployment, Indiana’s Department of Workforce Development says total private sector employment fell by 7,500 jobs in September.  Still, DWD Commissioner Mark Everson says any drop in unemployment is welcome news.

Unemployment rates went down in all IPR counties – some significantly.  Most showed rates between 8 and 11 percent.  All Indiana’s neighboring states show a double-digit unemployment rate, except for Illinois, which sits at 9.9 percent.   Statewide, Indiana unemployment is still above the national rate of 9.6 percent, which was unchanged from August.
