The Delaware County Sheriff has died unexpectedly a week after having surgery on his shoulder. Mike Scroggins was 52. He served with the sheriff’s office for three decades, leading the office as Sheriff since 2011.

Chief Deputy Jason Walker says Scroggins had shoulder surgery last week at a hospital in Ohio. This morning, he got the call that Scroggins had died. Walker says Scroggin’s doctor thinks the cause was a heart attack or blood clot from the surgery.

Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler remembered Scroggins at a service today held annually to remember police officers who have died in the line of duty.

Scroggins, a Democrat, was serving his second term as Sheriff. Delaware County Clerk Mike King says local Democrat precinct committeemen will caucus to choose someone to fill the rest of Scroggins’ term through 2018.
