Embattled BMV hires new general counsel

By Stephanie Wiechmann | Published on in Uncategorized

Indiana’s Bureau of Motor Vehicles has announced its latest new hire – a new general counsel for the state agency that’s been the subject of lawsuits over fees and an outside assessment in the past several years.

Officials with the BMV say Adam Krupp will be representing the agency in legal matters. Krupp is an Indiana native with degrees from Purdue University and the Indiana University School of Law. He also clerked for the Indiana Court of Appeals.

This month, a report by consulting firm BKD uncovered more BMV overcharges and a catalog of about 1,200 fees that the firm says are “riddled with errors.” BMV Commissioner Kent Abernathy says he’s working with legislators to fix problems and one such lawmaker says he wants a summer study committee to focus on the agency. And a Marion County judge is considering the fate of a new lawsuit that addresses the BMV overcharges. Lawyers on both sides disagree on how the suit should be classified in the courts.

BMV officials say the agency also recently hired a new chief information officer.
