Indiana State Police number spoofed for scam calls
A phone number belonging to the Indiana State Police is being used for scam tax collection calls to Hoosiers. State police officials say a public phone number for the state police office in Evansville has been “spoofed.” This means phone scammers are hiding the real number they are calling from by using the Evansville number on caller ID displays.
State police say at least one phone scammer is now calling Hoosiers, identifying himself as a police officer, then threatening to arrest people for unpaid taxes to the IRS. Police say this is a common scam. In reality, local or state police do not call residents about unpaid taxes.
