Hoosier Laws on Birth Certificates Slow to Change Regarding Same-Sex Marriage Couples
(INDIANAPOLIS) – Indiana’s laws on birth certificates haven’t caught up to the legalization of same sex marriage. Two same-sex couples with children have filed a federal lawsuit against the State Department of Health and the Marion County Health Department because they will only list the name of one parent – the birth mother – on the children’s birth certificates. The state, including Attorney General Greg Zoeller’s office, says it is because only a mother and father can legally be listed on the certificates. This is the case even though same-sex marriage has been legal in Indiana since June 2014 – the birth certificate law hasn’t changed.
