Kids Count survey: Same poverty, more violence in Indiana
A new annual federal report on the well-being of America’s kids has been released. Among Indiana’s 1.5 million children, 21 percent are living in poverty and are food-insecure. Those numbers from the Indiana Youth Institute are largely unchanged from the previous year.
East central Indiana’s Jay County has topped the list for the largest percentage of children living in poverty – 35 percent. It also has the lowest median household income, with families making a full $10,000 per year less than the state average.
The Indiana Youth Institute’s report found an upswing in violence among Hoosier kids. Indiana Public Broadcasting’s Ryan Delaney has those details.
Other measures show improvements in the lives of Hoosier children. The number of teens binge-drinking alcohol and using illicit drugs and cigarettes went down from previous years.
