Despite delaying a state takeover, a bill expected to be signed by Governor Eric Holcomb still has Muncie Community Schools looking at how to cut millions of dollars from its deficit.

Once signed, MCS will be designated as “financially impaired.”  To defeat a full state takeover in January, the district and an emergency manager to be named will need to make progress on reducing debt.  At a school board meeting Tuesday night, Superintendent Steve Baule was asked what progress the district needs to show.  He says he can only guess.

Baule and the school board are hopeful they’ll get more clarity next Monday night, May 1.  That’s when the Distressed Unit Appeals Board will meet with the district in a public meeting at the Muncie Area Career Center.  That meeting begins at 6:30 pm.
