A swinging and spinning amusement park ride called the Fire Ball broke apart Wednesday at the Ohio State Fair, killing one man and injuring seven others. Now Indiana State Fairgrounds says it won’t use the same ride at the fair next week.

Indiana Department of Homeland Security spokesman John Erickson talks about what ride inspectors do at every fair and festival.

“It starts with the paperwork and if there’s any gaps there they will talk to the ride owners or operators about that, they’ll resolve those issues and then they go do the inspections on the rides. And what they are looking at is does it operate within the manufacturers requirements,”  Erickson said.

IDHS has a website called “get prepared.in.gov” where you can look up amusement park ride safety information.

“If you see an inattentive operator, if you see what you think might be mechanical issues, we ask people first talk to the person operating the ride as long as you feel comfortable doing that.”

Formal ride inspections will be completed at the Indiana State Fair next Thursday, August 3. Opening day is August 4.
