A special prosecutor assigned to investigate the fatal police shooting of 54-year-old Eric Logan spoke to the press this morning in South Bend. He has marshalled detectives from the Indiana State Police force to aid in the task.

Special Prosecutor Richard Hertel, who is out of Ripley County, Indiana, says he wants to introduce himself before talking to potential witnesses and reviewing evidence from the case. He says he has spoken to Logan’s family members and homicide detectives and urged anyone with information about the June 16 shooting to come forward.

“But when I’m asked about a timeframe, my response is going to be: as long as it takes,” he says. “Because while we want it to be expeditious, we want it to be complete and we want it to be done right.”

Hertel says the investigation will focus on the case and not the conduct of the South Bend Police Department. He will not provide updates again until the investigation is complete.
