Choir Sings Out Against Cancer’s Influence On Their Lives

While there are many groups that aid Hoosiers with the fight against cancer, one in Muncie helps with song.  This weekend, dozens in Muncie got together at a local retirement community to hear from a special choir called Survivor Voices.  As IPR’s Kwaku Dakwa reports, choir members are bonded by fighting the same foe.

While this Muncie-based choir, Survivor Voices, may sound like many other choirs, this one has a unique purpose.  Its main goal is to bring hope to those who had or are currently struggling with cancer.

Molly Flodder is the co-director of the group and believes that the event would be a great way to bring awareness to the group.

“We were looking to do something in a very nice place where we could be for several hours, enjoying ourselves and we wanted to make it a recruiting event.”

The choir has about 22 members, including Kay Stickle, who is herself a cancer survivor.

“I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 30 years ago. I had surgery for that followed by chemotherapy.”

Stickle said one of the struggles she had while battling cancer was not having a lot of energy.

“When I was in chemo, I got tired. And that was hard to realize, that I didn’t have the energy that I used to have.”

Stickle did have some advice for those currently struggling with the disease.

“You have lots of people counting on you in your family, in your workplace, in your community and agencies. And every nurse and every volunteer here in the cancer center is cheering for you to recover.”
