Indiana University says it will temporarily suspend in-person classes after the school’s scheduled spring break.

Students will be on spring break from March 15 – 22.  After that, coursework will move online for all IU students until April 5.

In a letter from university president Michael McRobbie, the university is encouraging students to stay at their permanent off-campus homes if they can.  But, it will not close campus, residence halls, or dining facilities.

Departments at IU are being tasked with deciding if faculty and staff are able to work remotely as well.   New events of more than one hundred people are being discouraged.  Organizers of already-scheduled events are strongly encouraged to reschedule or cancel.

This move comes as Indiana has confirmed six cases of the COVID-19 illness.

University-sponsored travel out of the state will also be suspended through April 5 and personal travel out of the state is being discouraged.

The last time IU adjusted classes due to widespread illness was when the university shut down for 10 days due to the Spanish influenza on Oct. 10, 1918.
