Delaware County Rail Spur Will Finally See Use As Goods Transport Hub
More goods will soon enter Delaware County by train, as the county announces it will begin to make use of a railroad spur built for a company that didn’t end up bringing jobs to the area. IPR’s Stephanie Wiechmann explains.
Good Industries of Ohio will begin using a railroad spur once built to haul wind turbines for Brevini Wind. The spur is near the building meant to be Brevini’s manufacturing facility. It connects to a Norfolk Southern rail line.
Good Industries says it will make rail hauling available to local companies that don’t already have access. In a statement, it says one rail car will hold the equivalent of up to five semi-truck loads, so goods delivery by train is more efficient for some companies. It hopes to see more than 120 cars at the spur in its first year.
Good Industries will pay Delaware County a percentage of the shipping revenue to use the spur. It’s also taking over the maintenance costs.
The rail connection was built in 2008 with help from a federal grant. Since then, the promised jobs at Brevini Wind never materialized, and the city has recovered more than $1 million in incentive funds promised to the company.
