The Delaware County Commissioners have announced several new repaving projects for roads in northwest Muncie.

For $1.1 million, five streets and a whole subdivision will be repaved.  Data from a local Muncie-Delaware County Metropolitan Plan Commission study says average daily traffic on these roads is between 9,000 and 17,000 cars.

Officials say they hope to begin repaving these roads in October, with the goal of finishing before winter sets in:

  • Five lanes of Morrison Road from Keller Road to Bethel Avenue
  • Clara Lane from Bethel Avenue to Walmart
  • Bethel Avenue from Morrison Road to Cardinal Carwash
  • Baker Lane from Morrison Road to Bethel Avenue
  • All of Lantern Park subdivision
  • Benton Road north of McGalliard Road

Clara Lane – traveled by many shoppers on the northwest side – presents a unique challenge for the county and city, as the portion in front of Walmart is actually owned by Walmart.  Brad Bookout is the county’s Director of Economic Development and Redevelopment.

“It is not owned by the city or the county, so we have to stop the paving at Walmart,” says Bookout.  “I’ve asked the city engineer to ‘notice’ Walmart that we’re planning to do a repaving, and to ask Walmart if they would, in fact, repave that also.  I don’t know how that’ll go, but we’ve at least made the inquiry.”

The projects will be paid for from the Morrison Road TIF district, so the repaving must fall within that district’s boundaries.
