Indiana is naming a portion of State Road 13 running through Madison County for an Elwood police officer who was killed during a traffic stop last year.

The Indiana Department of Transportation says the “Officer Noah Jacob Shahnavaz Memorial Mile” runs between South Sheridan Street and just south of County Road 1000.

In July of 2022, 24-year-old Shahnavaz died in his police cruiser during a traffic stop when a suspect got out of his car and started shooting.  The US Army veteran had served with the Elwood Police Department for 11 months.

The road naming is a resolution passed by the Indiana state Senate at this year’s legislative session.

Carl Boards II of Anderson has been charged with murder and other offenses for Shahnavaz’s death.  The Madison County prosecutor is seeking the death penalty.  Boards is scheduled to go on trial in January of 2025.
